Residential Security Tips While it's true that a MonitorU.com security system is one of the most comprehensive and effective methods you have to protect your home, taking care of the basics in home security is an important part of getting the most out of your system. So we've compiled a list of home security tips to help make you and your home an even more difficult target for criminals. Because smart tips make for smarter security. First Things First You'd be amazed how often these simple precautions are overlooked. Make sure that your home has these basics in security. 1. Install dead bolt locks, preferably of the double cylinder type, on all exterior doors, including patio, atrium and garage doors. Also, be sure to change all locks when moving into a new residence. 2. Make sure that all solid exterior doors have peep holes, preferably with a wide-angle lens. These are available at your local hardware store and are relatively easy to install. 3. Check all window locks and replace those that seem weak or ineffective, especially on ground-level windows. There are a wide range of good window locking systems available, including some that are key-operated. 4. Attached garages should be kept closed and locked at all times. If access to the garage is obtained, the criminal then has a visually sheltered place in which to leisurely breach security in the main house. 5. Never admit strangers into your home. Make it a habit to require identification of all service people entering your home, and don't feel foolish about calling the company the stranger claims to represent to verify that he or she is supposed to gain admittance to your home. 6. A telephone answering machine is a good security investment if you don't already own one. Always leave it on, set to pick up just after a few rings. This will eliminate the problem of a potential burglar hearing your phone ring endless times, indicating that no one is home. The message callers hear should indicate not that you're gone, but simply that you cannot take the call at the present time, but you will return it shortly. Never repeat your phone number for the benefit of the caller and don't use your surname in the message.
